Daniel Cuttiford wasn't supposed to be in Tasmania. He was a typical Coventry lad who married and had a family in Kenilworth. His descendants remained in the Midlands of England until well into the 20th Century.
So how did I find him? With the help of four totally unrelated web sites,
maintained by four totally unrelated people/organisations:
1. The most excellent Covkid site,
maintained by John Russell, and specifically, his Criminal
Database;
2. The Coventry
Trade Directory of the 1830s listed on the Genuki
site;
3. The 1866 Spring
Bay Post Office Directory listed on the Rootsweb
web site; and
4. The Port Arthur Authority web site
and its enquiry service maintained by Susan Hood.
But that was just the start. The search for facts stretched over many months and was only achieved through the help of the following people to whom I extend my sincere thanks:
John Denny, Hinckley, Leicestershire, England
Wendy Boland, Shellhabour, New South Wales, Australia
Maureen Martin, Launceston, Tasmania, Australia (Glamorgan
& Spring Bay Districts)
John Russell, Coventry, Warwickshire, England
Susan Hood, Port Arthur Authority, Tasmania, Australia
National Library of Australia (NLA)
Archives of Tasmania (AOT)
National Maritime Museum of Great Britain
Wendy K Preston, Australian Capital Territory, Australia
